Gary Karlsrud’s musical roots sprout out in all directions. His second album “Out There in the Middle”, brings rock, funk, R&B, and ska to the table, all served up with special sauce.
Travel has shaped the man and his music. His ability to slap and grove landed him in a funk band competing for gigs with Sly Stone in Honolulu. He played Latin and Reggae in the Caribbean. He ended up on stage and on records with the band Big Clock in Boston during the city’s alternative rock revolution. His original rock band Fashion Heros performed regularly at CBGB’s and Kenny’s Castaways in New York City. Now he lives in New Hope PA, writing and recording songs and playing at local venues.
Gary’s first solo EP “Level Road” is a collection of songs spanning several styles. He played all the instruments, and leveraged inspired guitar solos from long-time musical collaborator Fran Heidkamp. For his Album “Out There in the Middle”, it’s a full band sound. Live drums, tight rhythm tracks and soaring guitar solos from Heidkamp, Bill Fowler, and Kevin Rovner. Karlsrud adds new sounds and unexpected morsels like a piccolo bass solo that most will mistake for a guitar. The journey continues with more songs and new ideas.
